There are many reasons why someone might want to clone pages and posts in WordPress. For example, you may have created a post which you want to use as a template for other posts. Instead of having to recreate that post each time, you could simply clone it and edit it as required.
However, WordPress doesn’t come with this function and the easiest way to clone pages and posts is to use a plugin to do it for you.
Duplicate Post Plugin
By far the most popular plugin available to duplicate pages and posts is simply called “Duplicate Post”. It’s a free plugin and is available for download in the WordPress Plugin Directory.
This popular plugin is regularly updated and has a rating of 4.9 out of 5 with over 1 million installs.
Using Duplicate Post
After downloading and installing the plugin, you will be given two new options to clone a page or post.
If you select “Clone” the plugin will copy the page or post without opening the editor. On the other hand, if you select “Post to a new draft”, the plugin will not only copy the page or post, but it will also open up the editor screen for you so that you can easily start to edit the newly created post or page.
First, you need to locate the page or post that you want to clone by clicking on either “Edit Pages” or “Edit Posts”. Find the page or post you want to clone in the list and you will see two new options in the horizontal menu below the post title.
Alternatively, if you are in the page or post edit screen, you will see an option to “copy to a new draft” above the “Move to Trash” link on the top right-hand side of the screen.
The plugin also comes with a range of options to suit your requirements. In the plugin options screen you can choose whether you want to clone or copy the following things:
. Publication date
. Page status (i.e. draft, published or pending)
. Attachments (attachment files will not be copied)
. Child pages related to the parent page being copied
. Taxonomies and Custom Fields
You can also add a prefix or a suffix to the post or page title and set which user roles are required to be allowed to clone pages and posts.
The Duplicate Post plugin not only copies standard pages and posts, but it also has the ability to clone custom post types. This allows you to make very complex pages and posts and copy them easily with a click of a button.
Without an out-of-the-box solution to clone pages and posts in WordPress, you’ll need to use a plugin. One of the best plugins available on the market to achieve this goal is called “Duplicate Posts”. It’s a free and easy-to-use plugin which is invaluable if you need to clone parts of your WordPress website.
Obviously, having a lot of copied content is bad for search engine optimization (SEO), but the plugin can be extremely helpful if you want to create a template which can be copied and edited to suit your requirements.
