Improving Email Deliverability with Outbound Spam Filtering

Spam is a constant annoyance. No one likes it, and just like the mailbox at your house you spend most of your time going through the junk to find the few pieces of mail to find the ones you actually wanted.

Now imagine if your outbox also became part of the email spam problem, and starting sending messages out from your email from some prince in Nigeria, or an email about needing to “enhance” a certain body part. What if your email was sending viruses?

Bots are constantly scouring the interwebs looking for vulnerabilities to exploit, with malicious intent. While our servers are locked down and secure as they can be, your account can be vulnerable. Often CMS (Content Management Systems) like WordPress and Joomla and related plugins are exploited, and because they are so frequently used now these bots are looking for these vulnerabilities. And when it one, it does what it intends to do, which is compromise your account and once it does it gains access to your email account. Once that happens, off they go and the emails start going out.

This is an issue for both you and us, as in a shared hosting environment the reputation of the IP sending the email can then become blacklisted, and effect not only you but every other client using that IP to send emails. That IP reputation is important to make sure your messages get to the intended target.

In past, what we’ve done to limit this risk is set limits on the number of emails per hour to limit any damage that can be done. Plus, we do malware scans to detect these nasty little buggers that have found their way on to your account. They both do the trick, but we have decided to up the ante.

The first phase of our new next generation email security is outbound spam filtering through our new product called SAFE (Spam and Anti-Virus Filtering for Email). Now automatically included on all of our Shared Hosting, Enterprise Hosting, and Reseller Hosting plans, all emails sent from your email accounts are sent through our server filtering cluster in our Toronto and Vancouver locations, which send emails from a random pool of IP addresses. This filtering cluster looks for and detects any spam with a 99.9% accuracy and rejects them from being sent out. Through the logs themselves, we can see if any messages have been scrubbed, and isolate and identify the account in question that is sending the spam and contact the respective account holder to advise of the situation.

The benefits to both you and us are immense. Your legitimate emails will be delivered because the IPs being used to send emails in a shared hosting environment will maintain an excellent reputation.

We will be able to work proactively in advising you if your account has been compromised, as opposed to us having to deal with an IP that has possibly been blacklisted and us getting messages from others that their emails are not getting delivered.

Is there an additional cost to this? No, not at all. Making your email accounts SAFE is important to us.
