The ABCs of Backing Up Your Data

Frequently we are asked the question of “Do you keep backups?”. The simple answer to this is yes, we do have backups as it is the prudent thing to do for proper disaster recovery if the unthinkable happens.

For our shared hosting, enterprise hosting, and reseller hosting, the backups are available through cPanel directly. Our Managed VPS are also backed up, but this is something we need to restore for you. We are looking in to a self restore option for our Managed VPS plans but we do not yet have an ETA on that. Everything that is backed up from our two data centers in Canada, in Toronto and Vancouver, are backed up and stored at the other data center respectively. So, Toronto data is backed up to Vancouver, and Vancouver is backed up to Toronto.

Now for those of you thinking that because we are doing this you don’t need to worry about doing it, I suggest that you think about your defense strategy if something were to happen. How critical is your content you have with us? How disastrous would it be if this became unrecoverable? Do you have a backup plan?

Backing up your data should have multiple fail overs, like we do with our network itself. If you are relying on only point, and that should fail over, it could be a game over for you. That beautiful site that you’ve been working on for years could vanish without a trace. While our backups are pretty reliable, there are times when for some reason or another, what you are looking for is not recoverable. There are times as well where we’ve been asked if we have a backup from a year ago. While we’d love to do that, having one year of backups would not be possible with all the disk space that would take, so we typically have one week back, and beyond that unfortunately you would be out of luck. When you are making changes to your site, do you do your own backup?

The ABCs of backing up your data is simple – Always Backup your Content/Data.

A survey conducted by Harris interactive indicated that 29% of you (so that’s 1 in 3 approximately) never do this, another 22% of you backup once a year, and 16% haven’t done it in over a year. So, that means 67% of Canadians (or 2/3rds) are hoping that we are doing this for you much more frequently than you are.

There is an old adage that runs around our office that is “There are two types of people in this world, people that back up their data and people that have never lost any data”. So if this survey is correct, about one in three of you have lost data at some point and you have a regular routine in place to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Remember when you bought your first car? Why did they give you two sets of keys to your car? You only need one to drive it right? Oh right, it would be a pain in the butt if you lost (or misplaced) that one set of keys so that second set is your contingency plan?

So our advice to you is very simple and straight forward:

– Set up a regular schedule to backup all of your data to your computer. Better yet, keep it in a couple places (data stick, external hard drive, etc).

– Make a practice of whenever you are making changes to your site that you do a quick backup before you do. That way if you need to revert your site back you can do it quickly and easily. Remember, we backup your stuff once a day and any changes in between wouldn’t be recoverable.

The moral of the story here is backup your data, and make it a regular practice to do it. We are your first line of defense, and you can always contact us or use our backup manager to restore your files. And if for some reason that isn’t what you need, not to panic because you have your own backups too!
